CP NewsAlert: Trump’s tariff war is CP’s News Story of the Year
Written by The Canadian Press on December 23, 2025
OTTAWA — U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff campaign against Canada — and the surge of national pride it triggered — have been voted The Canadian Press News Story of the Year.
Nearly two-thirds of editors and news directors surveyed from media organizations across the country chose Trump’s tariffs as the most consequential story of 2025.
The president dominated headlines throughout the year as his tariffs rattled Canadian manufacturing — and as he repeatedly called for Canada to become the “cherished 51st state.”
Canadians responded with a wave of national pride and hit back against Trump’s threats by boycotting American products and cancelling trips south of the border.
Prime Minister Mark Carney presented himself as the person to lead Canada through the crisis, allowing him to secure the Liberal leadership and win a fourth electoral victory for the party, which previously seemed doomed to defeat at the hands of Pierre Poilievre and the Conservatives.
The Toronto Blue Jays’ World Series run and the spring federal election also won votes for the 2025 news story of the year.
More coming.
