Written by on April 8, 2026

NORTH HURON, ONTARIO — School board officials say mental health support is being offered to staff and students of a Huron County high school after Ontario Provincial Police responded to a report of a person on fire.

A spokesperson for the Avon Maitland District School Board says a student was reportedly injured in an incident involving a fire at FE Madill Secondary School in North Huron on Tuesday and is being treated in hospital.

Chera Longston says in a statement that students were safely relocated to an elementary school Tuesday and the board is assessing the fire damage to determine when students and staff can return.

Longston says that in the meantime, students are learning online according to their usual schedule.

Provincial police said Tuesday they were called to the high school shortly after 8 a.m.

They said one person suffered life-threatening injuries and was in stable but critical condition after being airlifted to hospital.

Police have asked that anyone with video of the incident refrain from distributing it.
