Ontario’s police watchdog says it is investigating a report that a provincial police officer fatally shot a man inside a courthouse in a remote part of northern Ontario.
The Special Investigations Unit says a team of investigators is heading to the scene in Wapekeka First Nation.
It says preliminary information indicates that an Ontario Provincial Police officer fatally shot a man but more details won’t be available until the team is on the ground.
Lawyer Karen Seeley says her colleagues who were present at the courthouse witnessed the shooting this morning.
Seeley says her colleagues told her that someone walked into court and took out what appeared to be a knife before police shot him.
The makeshift courthouse is described on its website as a fly-in location that provides a small number of court services on limited dates.
