Police in Toronto area make arrests in alleged counterfeit currency sales ring

Written by on April 6, 2026

TORONTO — Police in the Toronto area have arrested half a dozen suspects in an alleged counterfeit currency sales ring operating through social media.

Halton Region police say they became aware last summer of two public Instagram accounts that linked to online stores selling various counterfeit currency bundles labelled as “film prop money.”

They say online orders were processed through a credit card and shipped across Canada.

Police say officers were able to link the sold counterfeit bills to frauds across the Greater Toronto Area and eventually identified a group of suspects behind the accounts.

Investigators say the operation generated more than $60,000 in online sales before police intervened.

They say officers searched three Toronto homes and vehicles associated with the suspects on March 31, seizing items that included bundles of counterfeit Canadian, European and Australian money, 13 cellphones and multiple laptops.

Six suspects between the ages of 21 and 31 are each facing multiple charges.
