Police in Ontario charge former OPSEU branch president with fraud

Written by on October 1, 2025

Police west of Toronto say they have charged a former Ontario Public Service Employees Union branch president after an investigation into an alleged misappropriation of union funds.

Peel Regional Police say that after an internal investigation, OPSEU Local 228 provided evidence that led to a criminal investigation.

Police say more than $100,000 was allegedly misappropriated.

They say 41-year-old Mark Babcook from Toronto was arrested on Sept. 19 and charged with fraud over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime.

Babcook was released with conditions to appear before the Ontario court of justice in Brampton at a later date.

The charges have not been tested in court and police are asking anyone with information to contact them.
