Peel police could not have prevented teen’s fatal fall in mall parking garage: SIU

MISSISSAUGA — Ontario’s police watchdog says it is no longer investigating the self-inflicted death of an 18-year-old man in Mississauga last year after determining there was no way officers could have intervened.
The Special Investigations Unit was called to investigate in November after the man died at a parkade at Square One Shopping Centre.
The SIU says Peel Regional Police officers responded to a call on Nov. 12 about a man in distress, and when the first officer arrived on scene the man climbed on the ledge of the third level of the parkade and intentionally rolled down the structure.
The SIU concluded the man was experiencing “severe mental health distress” in the moments before his death and engaged in an intentional act of self-harm.
It says the officer was about 80 metres away from the man when he fell, and there was “no reasonable opportunity to intervene or prevent the outcome” because of how quickly it unfolded.
The SIU is an independent agency that investigates the conduct of police officers that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
