Ontario hockey player remains hospitalized after workout collapse, ASU investigating

ST LOUIS — Arizona State University is reviewing the circumstances surrounding an outdoor workout that left St. Louis Blues prospect Matthew Mayich hospitalized last week.

The university confirmed Wednesday that an ASU hockey player collapsed during an outdoor exercise and remains in hospital, but declined to identify the athlete because of privacy concerns.

Blues president Doug Armstrong identified Mayich in a statement Wednesday, saying the organization has been kept informed about his condition and is supporting his family.

The 21-year-old Mayich is from Stoney Creek, Ont.

According to multiple reports, Tempe Fire Medical Rescue crews responded at 8:30 a.m. on Aug. 20 to a report of a heat-related illness.

“The entire Blues organization is keeping Matthew Mayich close to our hearts as we pray for his comfort and recovery while he continues to undergo medical treatment in Arizona. His agent has kept us informed about Matthew’s medical status over the last week, and we extend our deepest support to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time,” Armstrong said.

Mayich was a sixth-round pick by the Blues in the 2023 NHL draft. He started his college career at Clarkson before transferring to Arizona State this off-season. He had not yet signed an entry-level deal with St. Louis.

The six-foot-two, left-shot defenceman had 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) in 34 games as a freshman for Clarkson last season.

Before making the leap to the NCAA, Mayich played four seasons with the Ontario Hockey League’s Ottawa 67’s.

“Our thoughts are with Matthew, his parents John and Christina, and the entire Mayich family,” OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford said in a statement.

“The entire Ontario Hockey League is thinking of him and pulling for him, and we are keeping his family close in our thoughts.”
