Written by The Canadian Press on March 16, 2026
HAMILTON — Police say they have charged a Hamilton man after his elderly mother died in hospital last July.
Hamilton police say paramedics were called to a Stoney Creek residence for a woman in medical distress.
They say the 87-year-old woman was taken to the intensive care unit of Hamilton General Hospital, where she died on July 16.
Investigators say hospital staff contacted police after they suspected the woman was neglected.
They say the victim’s 61-year-old son was charged with manslaughter and criminal negligence causing death after a “lengthy” investigation.
Police say caregivers are legally obliged to provide the necessities of life for the people under their care.
Anyone with information about this or any other case of suspected abuse and negligence of seniors is encouraged to contact police.
