Environment Canada warns of heavy rain in eastern and southern parts of Ontario
Written by The Canadian Press on July 16, 2024
Environment Canada has issued rainfall warnings for parts of southern and eastern Ontario as a mix of heavy rain and thunderstorms come down across the regions.
The agency warns there could be rainfall amounts of up to 125 millimetres for parts of the Greater Toronto Area, and Hamilton could see up to 50 millimetres.
Parts of Eastern Ontario and into Ottawa are under a severe thunderstorm watch, and could experience showers with wind gusts up to 90 kilometres an hour and hail up to the size of nickels.
Peel Regional Police say they have had reports of manhole covers lifting due to the volume of rain and are urging residents to use caution when driving.
The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood warning and says that shorelines, rivers and streams in the Greater Toronto Area should be considered dangerous.
Environment Canada says the severe weather in the area is expected to last into early this afternoon and will gradually taper.
