TORONTO — Officials say an elderly man and woman are dead after an early morning Toronto house fire.
Emergency crews say they were called to the fire on Anthia Drive in North York around 4:20 a.m.
Toronto fire Chief Jim Jessop says firefighters were met with “heavy smoke” inside the house where they pulled out two elderly people.
Jessop says both were pronounced dead in hospital.
The fire chief says an investigation is underway, but there’s nothing to suggest the fire is suspicious.
He expressed condolences to the family and praised the work of the firefighters who “fought their way” into the house.
