Dog rescued from ice drift after chasing geese into Thunder Bay harbour

Written by on April 8, 2026

THUNDER BAY — A dog is back in the arms of its owner after firefighters in northern Ontario say the pooch went on an actual wild goose chase.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue says on social media that crews were called this week after a dog broke loose from its owner, chased geese into the harbour and got stranded on a piece of ice.

They say the owner tried to save their pet, but broke through the ice and made it back to shore.

Firefighters say crews from two different stations quickly sprang into action and rescued the dog, reuniting it with a “very relieved” owner.

Thunder Bay fire is reminding people that with the warmer weather, ice is no longer safe.

People are being reminded to stay off the ice, and animal owners should keep their pets on a leash near the water.
