Crisis workers set to be deployed to some Toronto subway platforms in November

TORONTO — The City of Toronto says crisis workers will be deployed to some subway platforms as part of a pilot project starting in November.
It says Toronto Community Crisis Service teams will be stationed round-the-clock at Spadina, Union and Bloor-Yonge Stations, and will respond to calls throughout a stretch of subway Line 1 with an enhanced presence at peak times.
Mayor Olivia Chow says the initiative aims to improve safety for riders and help the city respond faster to incidents on the transit system.
The pilot project will start on Nov. 15.
Transit riders will be able to access the crisis teams through the SafeTTC app, by talking to Toronto Transit Commission staff or calling 211.
The city says TTC special constables received more than 1,000 calls about someone in crisis in 2024.
