Coroner’s inquest announced in 2020 death of Toronto woman who fell from balcony

TORONTO — A coroner’s inquest is set to examine the circumstances surrounding the death of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, a Toronto woman who fell to her death from a highrise balcony six years ago while police were in her home.
Coroner Dr. Richard Wells announced the inquest on Thursday, though a date and venue for the proceedings have not yet been released.
Korchinski-Paquet, a 29-year-old woman of Ukrainian, Black and Indigenous ancestry, died on May 27, 2020.
Her death came days after the police killing of George Floyd, a Black man from Minneapolis, and further fuelled protests and calls to defund the police.
It was one of several incidents in the Toronto area that brought greater scrutiny to how police deal with people experiencing mental health crises.
Ontario’s police watchdog cleared Toronto police of wrongdoing in Korchinski-Paquet’s death, which it said happened as she was trying to move from her apartment balcony to an adjacent one while officers were in her home.
