Canada earns two judo golds, Warner claims decathlon silver at Commonwealth Games

GLASGOW — Canada won a pair of judo gold medals Friday at the Commonwealth Games, while Damian Warner added silver in the men’s decathlon.
Evelyn Beaton of Lethbridge, Alta., opened the country’s golden day on the mat by beating Cyprus’s Sofia Asvesta 1-0 in the women’s 52-kilogram final to win the Commonwealth title in her debut.
Julien Frascadore of Beauport, Que., followed with a second judo triumph, defeating defending champion Georgios Balarjishvili of Cyprus in the men’s 66-kilogram final in golden score, the sport’s overtime period.
Earlier, Montreal’s Heidi Quach earned silver in the women’s 48-kilogram final after falling 2-1 to India’s Asmita Dey in golden score.
Canada picked up a pair of boxing medals Friday. Edmonton’s Joshua Ofori settled for bronze in the men’s 80-kilogram division after a semifinal loss to India’s Ankush Panghal, while St. Albert, Alta., native Amber-Jane Wall claimed bronze in the women’s 51-kilogram class after falling 5-0 to India’s Sakshi Chaudhary.
At Scotstoun Stadium, Warner of London, Ont., settled for second in the men’s decathlon after two-time defending Commonwealth Games champion Lindon Victor of Grenada pulled away in the final two events to claim his third straight title.
The 2022 Olympic champion trailed Victor heading into the javelin, where the Grenadian recorded a meet-best throw of 63.06 metres to extend his lead. A season-best throw of 55.54 metres kept Warner in contention heading into the concluding 1,500 metres.
Victor finished 11th in the 1,500 in four minutes 51.78 seconds to secure gold with 8,096 points. Warner crossed sixth in 4:37.50 to finish with 8,036, while India’s Tejaswin Shankar claimed bronze with 7,976.
Race walker Evan Dunfee added a bronze medal in the men’s 10,000 metres, finishing third behind Australia’s Isaac Beacroft and Kenya’s Stephen Ndangiri Kihu. The Richmond, B.C., product was the defending Commonwealth Games champion and is the reigning world champion at the 35-kilometre distance.
Canada now has 52 total medals — 17 gold, 15 silver and 20 bronze. Australia is at 125 medals (55-28-42), while England has 78 (17-32-29).
Canada’s other medal chances Friday include Toronto’s Aaron Brown in the men’s 200-metre final, Brooke Overholt of St. Marys, Ont., and Savannah Sutherland of Borden, Sask., in the women’s 400-metre hurdles final, and Jennifer Elizarov of Waterloo, Ont., in the women’s pole vault final.
