SIU investigating after 19-year-old dies at UTM campus dorm

Written by on November 3, 2026

MISSISSAUGA — The province’s police watchdog says it’s investigating after a 19-year-old man was found dead at the University of Toronto’s Mississauga campus.

The Special Investigations Unit says preliminary information suggests the male died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after Peel Regional Police officers investigating an assault located the man at the UTM student residence.

News of the person’s death comes after the school issued a shelter-in-place order Monday night for students near McLuhan Court residence, a complex that houses hundreds of first-year students.

Peel police later said the incident, described as a dangerous weapons call, had been resolved and there was no threat to public safety in an update early Tuesday morning.

The SIU alleges the man who died had assaulted a woman in Brampton on Monday afternoon and police located him at a student residence near Dundas Street West and Mississauga Road.

The watchdog says a gunshot was heard and the man was pronounced dead early Tuesday.

The SIU says it has invoked its mandate because Peel Regional Police officers were in and around the scene at the time of the man’s death.

The watchdog says no other injuries were reported and there is no threat to public safety.

UTM says its campus is open today but classes are cancelled.
