Explosions heard in downtown Toronto as propane cylinders rupture

Written by on March 27, 2026

TORONTO — Loud bangs were heard in downtown Toronto during the evening rush hour as the fire department said several propane cylinders ruptured atop a building.

Toronto police say they received reports at around 6 p.m. of a fire on the roof of a building under construction at Richmond and John streets.

Police say they were told of items possibly exploding and debris falling onto the street below.

Capt. Deepak Chagger, public information officer with Toronto Fire, says the blaze has since been extinguished.

He added that there didn’t appear to be any fire spread to nearby buildings.

Paramedics said they were on scene but had not received any reports of injuries.
