Welltower to sell four retirement homes in deal with Competition Bureau

GATINEAU — The Competition Bureau says it has reached an agreement with Welltower OP LLC to address competition concerns related to its proposed deal to buy Amica Senior Lifestyles.
A review by the competition watchdog had found that Welltower’s purchase of the Amica properties would likely result in a substantial lessening of competition for retirement homes in areas of B.C. and Ontario.
Under the deal, Welltower will sell four retirement homes from its existing portfolio in Victoria, Vancouver, Brampton, Ont., and Ottawa.
The sales will be made to independent purchasers to be approved by the Commissioner of Competition.
Welltower, a U.S.-based real estate investment trust, owns 139 retirement home properties in Canada.
It signed a deal last year to buy Amica from the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan for $4.6 billion.
