Doug Ford to resident who shot alleged home invader: ‘Congratulations’
Written by The Canadian Press on March 18, 2026
Ontario Premier Doug Ford says a York Region resident who shot and injured an alleged home invader “should have shot him a couple more times.”
York regional police say the resident used a legally owned and properly stored gun and is not facing charges based on evidence collected at the scene.
A 24-year-old man who was shot is now facing multiple charges, including robbery with a firearm.
Ford was asked at a press conference today to weigh in on the case, as he was highly critical of charges — that were later withdrawn — against a man in Lindsay, Ont., who had been accused of assaulting an alleged home intruder last year.
The premier’s message to the resident was, “Congratulations. I’m glad you shot the guy.”
NDP Leader Marit Stiles says it is “irresponsible nonsense” for the premier of the province to encourage people to shoot each other.
