Written by on March 5, 2026

Ontario Provincial Police say a shelter-in-place order remains in effect in a northern Ontario community after a person was found dead, and officers are searching for two male suspects believed to be armed.

Police issued the order just before 9 p.m. Wednesday after a report of an “active incident” involving two possibly armed individuals in Atikokan, Ont., west of Thunder Bay.

They say just before 7 p.m., officers responded to reports of gunshots in the area of Don Park and one person was found dead.

Police have released a photo of the two male suspects who are described as armed and dangerous, wearing masks and dark clothing.

Police are asking residents to remain indoors and lock all doors and windows, and to call 911 if they see the suspects.

Anyone not currently in Atikokan is asked to avoid travelling to the area until further notice.
