TORONTO — Toronto police have upgraded a charge against a man accused of setting a tent on fire while someone was inside.

The accused, 36-year-old Loewen Wolfe of Toronto, is now charged with first-degree murder after police say the victim died.

Wolfe was initially charged with mischief endangering life, arson causing bodily harm, arson disregarding human life, arson damaging property and failure to comply with probation.

The fire took place on Boxing Day in the area of Charles and Yonge streets.

Investigators allege Wolfe set a tent and mattress on fire deliberately and threw various items on top of the tent to accelerate the fire.

Police say the victim, identified as 51-year-old Keith Appleby, was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition and died Monday.
