Man accused of shooting officer in Welland, Ont., remains in hospital: Niagara police
Written by The Canadian Press on December 22, 2025
Police in Niagara Region say a man who was arrested and injured by gunfire after he allegedly shot an officer on Friday remains in hospital and will likely face further charges, as the province’s police watchdog continues to investigate the incident.
Niagara regional police had issued a shelter-in-place order in the area of Plymouth Road and Second Street in Welland, Ont., around 7:45 a.m. Friday after police were met with gunfire while helping bylaw officers deal with a “fencing issue” around what is believed to be an old church converted into a home.
Police say an officer was shot in the chest and later released from hospital with minor injuries, while the suspect, 59-year-old Daniel Tronko, was arrested and charged with attempted murder on Saturday after a nearly 24-hour standoff with police.
The Special Investigations Unit, Ontario’s police watchdog, said in a statement Saturday that it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the “serious injury” the suspect suffered after he was shot by a police officer.
Niagara police say the accused remains in hospital today, but they could not provide further details due to the SIU investigation.
Police say they anticipate laying more charges, and will likely release further information after the SIU finishes its concurrent investigation.
