LONDON — A London man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a 47-year-old woman in the city.
London police say 56-year-old Alton Farquharson was arrested at the scene of the death and remains in custody with his next court date set for Dec. 23.
Authorities said earlier in the day that emergency responders were called to a home on Westminster Avenue at about 5:15 a.m. and found the woman suffering from a traumatic injury.
The woman was taken to hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead upon arrival, and police have characterized the death as a femicide.
Police did not release other details of the case, including the victim’s name due to the family’s request, other than the fact that the woman and the accused were known to each other.
The investigation by major crime officers is ongoing.
London police says in its release that specialized support is available for victims of intimate partner violence, adding that almost 80 per cent of victims in such cases are women.
Anyone with information on the death is asked to contact investigators.
