Family of toddler killed after vehicle drove through daycare demands action

Written by on September 14, 2025

The family of a toddler killed when an SUV drove into a daycare north of Toronto is speaking out and demanding change to boost safety in all childcare facilities.

One-and-a-half-year-old Liam Riazati died Wednesday after a vehicle drove into a Richmond Hill, Ont., daycare, leaving six young children and three adults injured.

Hundreds of family, friends and community members gathered at a local cemetery Sunday to honour Liam.

His aunt Mina Riazati says she never expected to mourn her nephew’s death and that it could have been prevented if safety measures were already in place.

She’s hoping legislation will be passed named after Liam to make sure childcare facilities are designed safely.

Richmond Hill mayor David West says he’s happy with the “swift action” by Education Minister Paul Calandra who is considering legislative changes to curb height and parking near childcare facilities.
