Letters to the Earth: Between Despair and Hope Exhibition
Letters to the Earth: Between Despair and Hope Exhibition
March 7, 2024 - April 14, 2024
The Georgina Centre for Arts and Culture, 149 High St, Sutton West, ON L0E 1R0, Canada
Event date Thu, Mar 7 - Sun, Apr 14 2024, All day
This second exhibition Letters to the Earth: Between Despair and Hope is another invitation to participate in a conversation about the environmental crisis, affecting us directly. We need this conversation to keep the talk going.
Participants and viewers are asked to share this discussion. It is our children’s future that we must preserve. We cannot sit back and blame corporations, the government, the rich, or the things that happened a generation ago.
The time for action is now.
Participants all wrote a Letter to the Earth as their commitment to the project. The artworks you will see address the current crisis and are talking points for future conversations.
As Winston Churchill said in a November 1936 speech, “The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to its close. In its place, we are entering a period of consequences.”

Wind Symphonies
Wind Symphonies
April 6, 2024 8:00 PM - 10:30 PM
Cornell Community Centre, 3201 Bur Oak Ave, Markham, ON L6B 0T2, Canada
Saturday, April 6, at 8 p.m. Cornell Recital Hall (Cornell Community Centre and Library)
Stravinsky’s Symphonies of Wind Instruments uses rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic devices reminiscent of The Rite of Spring, but is orchestrated for only wind instruments, and uses the plural form—Symphonies—not to denote the piece’s formal construction, but rather to invoke the broader term meaning ‘to sound together.’
Henry From then brings to life the same composer’s Concerto for Piano and Winds—a neo-Romantic work with unusual performing forces, since concerti were typically for a solo instrument and orchestra.
In Paul Hindemith’s Konzertmusik the piano, harps, and winds appear to be at odds with one another, with the former playing in a highly chromatic, atonal idiom, and the latter in a more melodic vein.

Location Georgina Centre for Arts and Culture (GCAC) 149 High Street Sutton, L0E 1R0 Canada

Newmarket Folk Society presents The Barrel Boys on April 27
Newmarket Folk Society presents The Barrel Boys on April 27
April 27, 2024 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Newmarket Legion, 707 Srigley St.,, Newmarket, ON
Established in 2012, The Barrel Boys is a five-piece acoustic string band based in Ontario, Canada. The band’s sound is built around rich vocal harmonies and virtuosic instrumental playing, and their unique repertoire of original material is informed by their fluency in classic bluegrass, old-time, country, and Americana. Each band member writes and sings their own songs, making for a wide stylistic range within the band’s sound.
In addition to being creative songwriters, The Barrel Boys are also seasoned performers. All five members crowd around a single vocal mic, making for a beautiful vocal blend and a dynamic stage presence. The group first honed its craft through a two-year weekly residency at Toronto’s Cloak and Dagger Pub, where they performed every Tuesday night. Since their humble beginnings, they have been featured on stages across Canada, including Mariposa Folk Festival (ON), Folk Fest sur le Canal (QC), Northern Lights Bluegrass and Old-Tyme Festival (SK), Blueberry Bluegrass Festival (AB), and Salmon Arm ROOTSandBLUES (BC).
The Barrel Boys’ most recent release Mainline is their third full-length album of original songs and tunes. This recording showcases the band's five unique singers and songwriters, complete with the top-tier vocals and picking that their fans have come to love. Their songs capture experiences from their own lives, as well as stories the Boys have collected from their journeys touring across Canada. The album earned them a nomination for "Vocal Group of the Year" at the 2021 Canadian Folk Music Awards.
